By the time Erika pulled into the valet pavilion at Carte Blanche Casino and Hotel, Christof was thoroughly wrecked. His bum ached from the metal vibrating against his tailbone, his hands ached from gripping the sides of the truck, and his skull hosted a colossal headache from the strain of . . . everything.

To make matters worse, he was 99 percent certain Sibylle and Erika were now conspiring against him. The way they’d gone from barely sheathing their claws to becoming bosom duet partners in the space of an hour? Well, it was highly concerning. Sibylle was enough of a menace when left to her own devices, but Erika was far more intelligent, experienced, and unapologetically wicked than his sister, and the last thing Christof needed was for those two to team up and concoct all manner of chaotic feminine plots.

The fate of Nachtmusik was already hanging in precarious balance. He needed to wrest things back under control.

Christof carefully disembarked from the truck bed and joined Sibylle, Waldo, and Sergei at the foot of the casino’s opulent steps. Eyeing their surroundings, Christof said darkly, “This place looks expensive.”

“More expensive than four thousand dollars a week?” Sibylle gave him a pointed look. From the corner of his vision, Christof saw Sergei disappear into the casino.

“Sergei!” Christof called, but it was too late.

“I will find him!” Waldo volunteered, dashing up the steps.

“No, Waldo—”

Then his drummer was gone too. Christof scowled and turned back to his sister. “We won’t be staying here. I’m calling us a car, and all Nachtmusik members will be returning to Paris.”

“I don’t think so, Big Brother. Erika said she can get us free rooms to stay overnight. Right, Erika, my new friend?”

“We’re not friends,” Erika mumbled in an unconvincing tone, and he read guilt in her expression. “But yes, I’ll ask at the front desk to have rooms reserved under each of your names. Sibylle made some very good points about the band needing a break. Sometimes, creativity needs air to breathe—”

“May I speak to you privately?” Christof growled in a low tone. Sibylle was watching their interaction with rapt attention, so he shooed her inside. “You, go find Waldo and Sergei and bring them back here.”

Sibylle rolled her eyes, but she complied.

“Relax,” Erika said when Sibylle was out of earshot. “It’s just a weekend.”

Relax? Was she speaking to someone else? “You know how much this album means to me. I thought we had an understanding.”

“Do we?” Her scarlet lips flattened. “I understand I’m giving you voice lessons out of the goodness of my heart. I understand that what happened last night in the closet is something I very much enjoyed and would like to do again.”

His abdomen tightened. “As would I.”

“But I’ve also decided that I like your sister, and I think you’re being unfair to your band by not telling them the truth. And it’s also unfair to me that I’m burdened with keeping your secret and have to sneak around in the dark of night just to get laid.
